It is interesting to see how television news and the Star Tribune are covering the police-sanctioned IDs controversy. Last night, television news had Chief Olson "backtracking" before the City Council and apologizing for how the police-sanctioned IDs situation was handled. Union President Delmonico's criticism and comments regarding city liability and CM Zerby's comments were prominently featured. KMSP-TV reporter Rob Leyden was seen waving a City Inc. financial report stating that this organization if flush with cash and hardly needs the $6,000, etc.
Today's Star Tribune headline regarding the same City Council meeting says "Police chief's actions supported" and features praises for how Chief Olson worked with identified community activists to prevent an explosive situation from escalating. Delmonico is quoted towards the end of the piece. http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/3196151.html This story is accompanied by a Star Tribune editorial which supports Chief Olson's actions and the use of police-sanctioned IDs. http://www.startribune.com/stories/561/3195549.html I am not surprised that television news is taking a more critical look at this controversy. As I understand it, television news reporters bore the brunt of the assaults on journalists during last week's disturbance. I am however somewhat surprised that the Star Tribune is strongly supporting the police-sanctioned IDs to the point where these IDs are equated with t-shirts and Neighborhood Watch patches.
