Just an ordinary day on the job at the plantation, AKA U.S.
Postal Service... Today a co-worker of mine was fired. His offensive?
Driving (truck) while Black. Yesterday a mechanical failure occurred
on the trailer he was pulling, causing the landing gear to drop while
going through downtown Minneapolis. No accident occurred, and the 18
year old trailer was due to be scrapped anyway. The "good ol' boy"
supervisor in training who "investigated" the "accident" has some
experience in accidents himself- last winter he ran a red light and
hit and injured a Mexican-American pedestrian...
In comparison, in the same department we had a white guy have
2 at fault accidents and 1 incident of indecent exposure during just
his 90 day probation- and they didn't even give him a written
reprimand! He later quit to drive for Minneapolis Public Works...
My now unemployed African-American coworker had worked for
the Postal Service for over a year- yet he was a "casual"- the lowest
caste of Postal worker, by federal law denied the right to union
representation and given no benefits. The "casuals" tend to be people
of color and/or immigrants. Without them the Postal Service would
completely shut down.

p.s.: None of the above entitles anyone to sell drugs in a
residential area full of children, trash public transit, torch news
vehicles, assault the working press, and shoot police officers.
