In the aftermath of incidents like the rampage, things
can seem pretty hopeless. People wonder, "What can I
do?"

I may be wearing rose-colored glasses, but I wonder
what would happen if everyone regularly performed one
random act of kindness.

Several years ago a car crashed through a picture
window of a barber shop at Penn and Golden Valley
Road. The shop remained open, but the window remained
boarded up for the longest time---I imagine the
replacement cost was steep. One Christmas Eve
afternoon I walked into the crowded shop and asked to
see the manager. She, and the customers, were
immediately on their guard.

I explained that I drove past the shop every day and
wanted to contribute to the window fund. I gave the
manager $10, her wariness turned to surprise and
delight, and she and everyone enthusiastically said
thank you and Merry Christmas. I imagine more than one
person talked about the crazy white woman that day.

Another time: We lived next door to a houseful of kids
who were absolute hellions. After numerous complaints
about them, I wondered what would happened if I read
to them along with my son. They were quiet, they were
interested, they were happy.

I'm proud of these two acts, but ashamed that I didn't
do them more frequently. I challenge everyone to do
perform a random act of kindness. It may not make a
whit of difference. But you never know...

Gotta feed the chickens. Talk to you later,
