List,
I honestly have not formed an opinion on the federal versus private mediation issue. But for those of you involved in that issue I have a couple questions: 1. There seems to be an assumption that the result of the mediation would mandate changes in behavior, procedures and policies for the police. Since it is mediation between different parties is it not equally possible that the result of the mediation would also include changes in behavior, procedures and policies in the community? 2. Assuming that there are changes in the community -- what organization(s) speak for the community in any manner of credibility as such they could be held accountable if those changes were not to take place? 3. Does the involvement of a federal mediator who works for the Attorney General's office impact immigrant communities? How does the Somali or Mexican community feel about the use of Ashcroft's AG department? 4. Isn't this the same federal mediator department that worked on "Save the Oak" versus DOT during the clash about the Hwy 55 re0route? How did it go there?
