The bike/car discussion is timely and pertinent, I
think. I wouldn't dispute Ms. Becker's point that we need to maximize
the viability of all transportation, and I can't dispute her claim that we have
the largest municipally owned parking system in the country (and no light rails
yet or well-planned bike paths downtown). I guess "we" focused our
attention on maximizing the viability of automobiles downtown and overlooked
maximizing the viability of the rest of the transportation system. How
does this speak to our vision or lack thereof in growing a city--all those
lovely parking places in those gigantic ramps and nowhere to drive
down there. That seems to underline the importance of efficient buses
there, as well as developing more efficient and safer bike lanes. Since
the large municipal parking ramps are at the periphery of the downtown, the cars
parked there wouldn't be the ones causing the congestion. I think I know
generally who's parking downtown and who's riding the buses downtown. And the
bikes. Hardly anyone's riding the bikes; I know many would-be riders
who are totally intimidated by the lack of safe bike access.
I agree with the bike supporters--let the cars park
in the peripheral parking ramps we so generously built for them--thereby
enabling us to maximize the viability of saner forms of transportation in the
immediate downtown. While I appreciate the argument against buses on
Nicollet, with the present car traffic there's no more sensible place for
the buses, especially since they are transporting folks who work in the Nicollet
area, in large part. I'd like to see more of the ramps right downtown
eliminated, which would encourage the car folks to park around the largest
muncipally owned parking system on the periphery. Then we could move the
buses over a street and let foot traffic and bicycles travel Nicollet, which
would certainly make more sense for that lovely avenue. Why I can already smell
cleaner air.
