I beg to differ with Ms. Heller's comment that citizen's gave the check to "a bunch of women that couldn't do arithmetic". Some of us could and did but we were treated like the Cassandra's of the council. Even voting no on many of these items we were still in the minority. Ms. Heller should think twice bfore making sweeping, sexist statements and hitting the send button. Oh boy, have I grown to appreciate David Brauer. And I mean that sincerely.
Mr. Mork seems a tad defensive. He wrote:
"But a clique of people cozy with business (cozy with you?) kept on giving handouts to them over the years. Ultimately, WE VOTERS got a belly-full of them and cleaned them out. As a result, this year’s council is a bit more circumspect. But the inescapable facts is that YOU BUSINESS OWNERS have transferred a whopping amount of taxes to WE RESIDENCE OWNERS. (Get your facts straight before you post, please)."
Vicky Replies:
1. I can assure you that none of the current or former council members are cozy with me - I sued the heck out them - and won! Fortunately, HUD indemnified the City, so payment of my Court award won't harm Minneapolis taxpayers.
2. If you think that "residence owners" are paying too much in property taxes, just you wait Mr. Mork, just you wait (you ain't seen nothing yet!) As I said before, businesses are tired of subsidizing the City's reckless spending - and they're leaving town in droves. Those of you who remain in the City get to pay the entire tab. What do you expect? You voters gave the checkbook to a bunch of women who couldn't do arithmetic - and to make matters worse, you didn't pay attention to what they were doing. You will get the tax bill you deserve.
3. It's true, the new Mayor and Council have shown some restraint, but they inherited a mother debtload, and there is really not much they can do except push the growing snowball uphill (so future taxpayers will have to deal with it or default on it.) Last year, the City's DEBT SERVICE PAYMENTS ALONE WERE $137 million - up from $97 million in 2000.
4. Since you're the new bully on the Forum I'll cut you some slack. For future reference though, you would be wise not to question my facts. I don't make statements that I can't prove.
Listmembers: Stay tuned. Tomorrow I am going to post the City's cash flow statement for 2001. Sit down before you read it.
