Folks: I've been following the pig poop fest regarding the 4th District County Commissioner race. As a recent addition to this district (Gail Dorfman was previously my representative), I admit to not being very familiar with either McLaughlin or Felien. I can appreciate some of the strong opinions held by some here on the List concerning McLaughlin, but the discussion thus far has been generating a lot more heat than light. I appreciate Wizard Marks' attempt to redirect the focus (in refreshing style) back to the issues. Ed Felien's post was a start but, as one who did NOT receive either of his position papers, I am no more enlightened by his positions now (and why I should support him) than I was an hour ago.
As someone who will actually have to vote in this race, I would appreciate hearing some concrete reasons to vote for either of these candidates. Since, as Jim Graham pointed out, we are dealing with the left wing of the political spectrum, regardless of how you characterize things, I don't expect the distinctions between these guys to be as great as, say, between Paul Wellstone and Norm Coleman. But, I assume they exist and would appreciate some insight. Consider this a plea for informed discussion, not a feeding frenzy for personal attack.
