I was startled and amused by the reference to "law-abiding obsessive" types
in a previous post. Just because Hiawatha looks like a highway, doesn't mean
that it is one. There are numerous pedestrians and bikers, including
children, along side Hiawatha every day and that alone justifies the 35 mph
speed limit. (I have noticed that all those drivers who mistake Hiawatha
for a highway, suddenly see the light when a squad car appears.)

Re: traffic calming and enforcement in general. We need to look at
ourselves first. How many of us hurry through that late yellow, drive 5 to
10 mph over the limit because everyone else is doing it, tap our brakes at
stop signs, blow through that right turn on red without looking? The police
(or neighborhood groups) cannot be everywhere, all the time. We need to do
our part and that just may include the startling concept of "obeying the
law" instead of simply disregarding those we consider inconvenient,
illogical, etc.?

Perhaps the "looks like a highway" logic applies to elected officials?
Couldn't they use it too as in: The system was designed for this--It seemed
right---Everyone else was doing it--etc? Maybe the Code of Ethics is our
"squad car".
