Many people, your supporters among them, have said they would appreciate a
debate between us on the issues in this campaign.
May I please make the following suggestion.
We should use this forum to formally debate public policy issues that have
come or will come before the County Board.
I would suggest the following format: One side begins debating the
affirmative of a proposition related to Hennepin County public policy. The
argument should be no more than 150 to 200 words. The second party responds
with a 100 to 150 word rebuttal to the affirmative and, then, he would begin
a new topic arguing the affirmative of a new proposition with an additional
150 to 200 words. One caveat, we may want to agree that once a subject has
been debated it is a dead horse and should not continue to be flogged.
I appreciate you have a difficult schedule. I do, as well. But in the
interests of an informed public and to involve the electorate in the
decisions of government, we should both take this little time to submit our
ideas, our programs and our hopes for the County to an audience that seems
anxious to judge them. We could easily debate two topics per week, one
posting on Monday and the second on Thursday or Friday.
Please respond as soon as possible. We have an opportunity here to change
and, perhaps, civilize public discourse on public policy.
Ed Felien, Powderhorn
