I do hope that this will open up discussion in getting rid of that pathetic street diversion at 28th and 1st Avenue which has done as much damage to a neighborhood that I grew up in than anything else, and it irks me to no end that that the City allows the neighborhodd to be depressed that way.
I fought against the closure of 1st Aveneue despite the Nicollet Avenue because I KNEW what it would do to my old neighborhood. Not my problem that some City official approved that K-Mart be smacked into the middle of a main arterial. But is my problem when the City makes poor decisions to step around the problem that fixing it straight on, and causes a great old neighborhood to disentegrate. I went to Vacation Bible School and the Seventh Day Adventist Church. I taught my brother how to ride his bicycle in the old doctor's office parking lot. I played freely and safely with my neighbordhood friends. My mother BBQ'ed every Sunday while visiting with our neighbors after going to church. We washed our laundry every weekend at Lee's Laundry. We always grabbed little treats at the 1st Avenue Co-op. At least once per week, me and my friends would pool our money to buy as many burritos as we could from Little Tijuana's. And I can never forget wishing I was old enough to walk into the Artist's Quarter!
The City needs to understand that reopening 1st Avenue will revitalize businesses being punished by that pathetic street diversion, and reinvigorate a great old neighborhood!
