I just returned from attending a seminar in Philadelphia and took some time to go to the visitors center and see the Liberty Bell.  I could  not believe how moved I was.  And it seemed all that much more important given the times we are living in.  If we go to war with Iraq it will affect our city.  Listening to the words of our founding fathers [and of course, missing the founding mothers and people of color who were undoubtedly involved...]  I could only think about how Democracy is a living thing and it can only work when everyone is concerned with everything that affects them and their families and communities.  If we go to war it will not only end the lives of many many Iraqi people, but it will wreck the lives of so many young American people and their families, the way Vietnam wrecked the lives of many people in my generation.  It will affect the money that is available in our fair city to deal with our many problems.  Let us not be so shortsighted as to not see the impact of this upcoming war and not be afraid to debate and educate ourselves and others about the reasons for and consequences of such an action -- and let us not allow such a war to happen without a full discussion of the goals and tactics that would be used.  Even here in the comparitively blissful backwater of Minnehappiness -- we SHOULD  join the debate, I believe we have a moral and political responsibility to join the debate.
