When I use public libraries, locally or elsewhere, I often take some time to browse local, national and international news-- in hard copy or online! I may also check my email to keep up on my electronic correspondence and information exchange. I prefer to not carry a laptop everywhere I go-- I don't even own one-- by choice. [And don't forget, many folks require free-access to the Internet in order to use it at all, including a free email account. This is of tremendous social value. Information may be a commodity, but like all commodities, it is not equally accessible to all.] There have been times when I specifically sought out a public library for Internet access, since many small and remote locations don't even have coffee shops or Kinko's-type establishments with online access. So, for me, public libraries are synonymous with 'something of value here within' and that includes 'free Internet access.' In addition, I expect a comfortable, safe indoor library environment regardless of season; and good coffee is great! The new Central Library will draw many more users than the former downtown library ever did-- largely because of it's design! And bravo, for more free Internet access!
