One thing that's been on my mind about the new library design, given
that we still have to raise $15-20 million to make it go

How essential is the 200-some seat auditorium?

It seems to me that the city has done a fine (maybe too fine) job of
subsidizing/building/encouraging downtown auditorium spaces - think
State, Orpheum, Pantages and perhaps Shubert.

I'm not criticizing as much as seeking information. How often is the
auditorium currently used? How often do planners think it will be in the
new library? Why is it essential, or at least a better use of $$ than
getting a one-of-its-local-kind planetarium?

Granted, the State, Orpheum, Pantages and even Shubert are all bigger
than 200 seats, but the first three are city-owned....so couldn't we get
commitments to be able to use such space for the kind of one-day,
during-the-day civic needs that the library auditorium would presumably
fill?

Thanks for any info provided me and the list.
