Today I attended a work-related event in Eden Prairie,
and drove down last night to spend the night. My
displeasure at having to drive from northern Pine
County to the southwest metro was tempered by the
realization I would see The Old Neighborhood. It was
interesting to see how much had stayed the same, and
how much had changed.

There were the obligatory campaign signs for Joe
Mullery and Linda Berglin. There was a considerable
number of Green Party signs, something I hadn't
noticed before. The area immediately north of Folwell
seemed cleaned up and more prosperous than before. My
old block was still congested, perhaps even more so,
if such a thing is possible.

My first stop in Mpls. was to see the new housing
along Humboldt. I was dismayed to see that the housing
was very much like the prefabricated housing that
proliferates Eden Prairie. But Minneapolis is home to
a diversity of styles, and part of that diversity
includes having cookie-cutter housing, I suppose.

I proceeded to drive down Penn Av North, Broadway,
Golden Valley, Plymouth, all the streets I'd driven
down before. Was it nerve-wracking? Not a fraction as
nerve-wracking as the freeway frenzy of Eden Prairie.

News of the theatre riot led off the 7 o clock news. I
couldn't figure out why Elvis Costello was listed on
the marquee if the concert was rap. I'm glad that
someone on the list pointed out that hundreds of rap
concerts have been held in the city without a melee
happening.

So now I'm home, catching up on my e-mails. Rosalind,
congratulations on the great press and best of luck
with your new shop! Wizard, you hit the nail on the
head with your analysis of rural life. The cost of
living ain't necessarily cheaper when the highest
wages are $7.25 an hour. Any affordability that rural
life held is quickly vanishing. Two years ago we
bought our home on 5 acres for $71,900, You can't
touch anything with acreage for under $100,000 today.
