I teach intermediate to hight level English to Somalis and Hispanics. Two of them are citizens. They have registered to vote and are eager to cast their ballots. The rest are learning English to get better jobs and become fluent and knowledgeable enough to become citizens. They work all day and attend English class from 6:30 to 9 four nights a week. They are smart, hard-working, and perhaps more cosmopolitan than your average Minnesotan.
Allowing permanent residents to vote and engaging them in our civic life would energize our city tremendously.
