You've probably never heard of it, but Minneapolis is home to the largest
and most successful branch of Infragard -- an outreach program sponsored by
the FBI to help coordinate potential first responders in business, education
and law enforcement in the event of threats to the local and national
infrastructure.

Special Agent Dan Miller has been the driving force behind the success of
Infragard. Now, due to bureaucratic rules at the FBI, Miller is being
forced to retire at a time when the FBI is suffering from a shortage of
skilled personnel. No one else at the local FBI office has an interest in
or an understanding of the Infragard program, but without FBI sponsorship
the chapter will fold.

This proactive, communications-based FBI program is a very positive effort
from an agency criticized by many. It's goal is the protection of municipal,
state and national infrastructure. I hope members of the list will take a
moment to learn about Infragard by visiting http://www.infragard.com and the
local chapter at http://mninfragard.org (the site is a little stale because
it's being relocated, but the information is still of interest).

If upon review you agree this is a concern for Minneapolis residents, please
consider contacting

D. Strebel Pierce
FBI - SAC, Suite 1100
111 Washington Ave S.
Mpls, MN 55401

And let him know you want to ensure that Infragard continues its proactive
work to protect Minneapolis and it surrounds.

Shameless plug: and for an example of a recent threat to our global
communications infrastructure, please review my article in CNet news:
