Nancy Russell and David Brauer write:: >If we're going > to remember history, let's remember it correctly, eh?What do you think?
Precisely. It seems nonsensical to erect a generic plaque that doesn't acknowledge that River-Lake Tabernacle's historical relevance is inextricably mixed up in anti-Semitism. If the HPC wants to ignore a major historic factor, they don't seem worthy of their name to me. A few years ago, when I interviewed Nellie Stone Johnson for her oral history, she vividly remembered the Raders of River-Lake infamy crusading against her and spewing filth. It still made her emotional 50 years later - both the outrage at their invective and the satisfaction she felt at overcoming their hate to become the first black elected in Minneapolis. Let's remember the history of River-Lake properly =8B as fully as possible. [Very side note: it did make me cringe thinking of the hard-working folks i= n Kingfield who have renamed the 40th Street Greenway the River-Lake Greenway= . Perhaps it should be the Lake-River Greenway now?] David Brauer King Field Having lived in a Historical Preservation Area for some time this is no surprise. They regularly miss important issues for petty details. Neighbors have a hard time repairing the simplest details on a porch or gutter; and yet the MIA can add 117,000 square feet without a peep of it's impact on the Victorians. It's like the old SNL line, Roman Empire, neither Roman nor an empire, discuss... Historic Preservation, neither historic nor preserved, discuss.....
