The answer to Joseph's question is that it's the wrong question. Who MUST carry on is the right question, and the answer is the same as always: We, the living.
As for the question "What are the qualifications?" What are the qualifications for WHAT?" For the directorship for which we allegedly don't have enough money? I'm not sure the board has seen fit to share that with the public. One more case where our institutions aren't transparent to those of us who foot their bill. And, no, I think it is much premature to think the Internet can be used as a replacement. Why? Well, what about all the people who must go TO the library just to access the Internet? And the fact is that taxpayers simply aren't prepared to provide everything for you to access at home. I've tried to search the magazine database from home, and it is restricted right now to certain IP addresses, none of which are mine. Face it. If we don't have the money to cover their present pipe dreams, we SURELY don't have to money to cover yours. We are better as a society to have buildings, modest functional buildings, devoted to learning for free. We don't need crystal cathedrals, but we also don't need massive technology projects to make buildings unnecessary.
