The answer to Joseph's question is that it's the
wrong question. Who MUST carry on is the right
question, and the answer is the same as always:
We, the living.

As for the question "What are the
qualifications?"
What are the qualifications for WHAT?" For the
directorship for which we allegedly don't have
enough money? I'm not sure the board has seen fit
to share that with the public. One more case
where our institutions aren't transparent to
those of us who foot their bill.

And, no, I think it is much premature to think
the Internet can be used as a replacement. Why?
Well, what about all the people who must go TO
the library just to access the Internet? And the
fact is that taxpayers simply aren't prepared to
provide everything for you to access at home.
I've tried to search the magazine database from
home, and it is restricted right now to certain
IP addresses, none of which are mine.

Face it. If we don't have the money to cover
their present pipe dreams, we SURELY don't have
to money to cover yours. We are better as a
society to have buildings, modest functional
buildings, devoted to learning for free. We
don't need crystal cathedrals, but we also don't
need massive technology projects to make
buildings unnecessary.
