Mike Krause, columnist for Lavender - and DFLer pushes for GLBT Voters to
vote for Kathleen Murdock over Mark Stenglein:

<<Perhaps the most interesting race in Hennepin County with a GLBT angle is
the one between Commissioner Mark Stenglein and challenger Kathleen "Kitty"
Murdock. This district includes Northeast and North Minneapolis, Bryn Mawr,
and Golden Valley, all areas with sizable gay populations.
Stenglein, you may recall, very publicly snubbed the GLBT community last
year during his quixotic run for mayor of Minneapolis, when he finished
fourth in a crowded primary field. Stenglein, who mostly was vying for the
votes of conservatives and independents as a mayoral candidate, refused to
participate in any GLBT Pride events or advertise in the GLBT press. He was
generally unresponsive to questions about his positions on GLBT issues. He
was quoted in the Star Tribune as saying he saw no particular reason to
appeal to the GLBT community for votes.
Murdock, on the other hand, is a moderate in the mold of popular Republican
state legislator Peggy Leppik, who has represented the many GLBT voters in
her Golden Valley district well for a number of years. A planner in the
county corrections department, Murdock has an uphill run against Stenglein,
because the incumbent's true colors are not coming out above all the noise
being generated by the U.S. Senate and governor's races.>>
===========================================
According to Eve White, Brian McClung, Stenglein's campaign manager,
advised Stenglein to avoid campaigning to GLBT voters, because "you aren't
going to get their votes anyway". McClung, like other Republican political
operatives who don't know Minneapolis politics ran a campaign where the
candidate came in 4th. Recall in that campaign, the Republican Party was
the gang who couldn't shoot straight, and they hurt the Stenglein campaign
with the pushpolling caper.
If Stenglein was looking for a good effective campaign manager who was
Republican, why not someone like Connie Nompelis, Lee Eklund or Carleton
Crawford? Why McClung? McClung was the person who ran the campaign of
the opponent of Mary Jo McGuire -- the issue used in that campaign -- the
opponent was married and had kids, and Mary Jo McGuire lived with her
mother. Talk about appealing to the stupid vote.
But I digress......
58B Race - Reed vs Ellison vs Presho vs Lijewski vs Smith
On Saturday I helped distribute literature for Duane Reed, candidate for
the 58B House race. I met a couple other list members -- specifically
Shawn Lewis, and also met Travis Lee, Natalie Johnson Lee's husband. I
asked Travis to clarify about whether Natalie was supporting Duane Reed or
supporting the Green Party candidate. Lee is taking no official position
on this race because she is Green Party. However Travis did express
irritation that the Green Party candidate wasn't seriously campaigning.
I recently got a letter from Ellison bragging about his support from Randy
Statten. That doesn't seem like the type of support to brag
about. Richard Jefferson and Greg Gray (who Ellison also claimed as
supporters) are respected leaders. Randy Statten brought disrepute on
himself when he served in the legislature.
Here's the results from the Primary:
Smith (Green) - 43, Lijewski (IP) 47, Presho (R) 177, Ellison (DFL) 1265
The question is how many of these votes will vote for an independent
(non-DFL) candidate during the general election. The question also is, was
the Jackie Cherryhomes dumping last year partially commentary on the DFL?
