Regarding MPL budget issues:

1. I suggest that the new central library remain named the Minneapolis
Central Library, or something similar. Sell any naming rights to the
galleria lobby area (and other internal spaces) and develop some 'use
arrangements' to go with the deal; stipulate that the annual funds received
for such events go toward operating expenses system-wide; and, retain the
ability/right to host/retain revenues from several events/extravaganzas to
be held throughout the year (into the indefinite future) with added
options/rights of first refusal aimed at benefiting the MPL, while reducing
taxpayer liabilities associated with maintaining a sound MPL system.
Develop joint ventures/cosponsor events that reinforce support for the
library- relationship marketing.

2. Don't close any neighborhood libraries; reduce operating hours on an even
basis throughout neighborhoods, then factor in recent neighborhood
contributions (i.e. NRP) to 'add-back' such reductions in an effort to
recognize neighborhood financial support of their community libraries.
Solicit future neighborhood financial support (i.e. NRP) for non-operating
funds and reallocate internal funds to better balance capital and operating
budgets (i.e. computer hardware/software and other technology-related
expenses are often capitalized).

3. Encourage community libraries to solicit funds for special projects and
operating funds, in an effort to reduce annual taxpayer liabilities. Offer
incentives that make it work!

4. Offer similar naming right options at community libraries-- get
innovative... put on your thinking caps. Leverage our public investments
and seek annual revenue growth that benefits taxpayers.

5. Evaluate and benchmark annual operating processes/procedures and expenses
relative to a similar peer group in an effort to improve operating
efficiency, and strive for continued improvements annually.

6. Re-Notice the Exec. Director position and target a manager with diverse
expertise in areas of financial and operations management, within existing
cost restrictions.

7. Don't forget to VOTE!!!
