Wellstone's death had absolutely nothing to do with it. The voting was
originally scheduled to happen October 23-25. News of Wellstone's death
broke in the
afternoon of October 25. The vote was held at some schools between
October 23-25, and may have been put off at other schools because of a delay
in
printing and /or shipping the youth voters guides and ballots. Election
materials
were supposed to reach the schools by October 22 but were not delivered at
some
schools until sometime between October 23-25.

The decision to delay the announcement of the mock election results until
after
the polls are closed on November 5 was definitely made sometime during the
week of October 28 to November 1, presumably after many schools had reported
vote totals to the Youth Coordinating Board Office. That's why one might
jump to the conclusion
that the decision to delay the announcement of returns for races other the US
Senate may serve the interests of DFL candidates, especially in the school
board race.

The YCB response to the comment and inquiries posted to the mpls issue list
about the Youth Vote 2002 mock elections are inaccurate, incomplete and
misleading. Those responses certainly call into question the propriety of
the
decision to delay the announcement of the results.
