There are many reasons people oppose the Access
Project, and high among them is the expansion aspect
tied to the project by MNDoT. In a memo to Govenor
Ventura's chief of staff, Steven Bosacker, dated
August 17, 2001, (a PDF copy will be posted to
www.stride-mn.org this weekend) Sharon Sayles-Belton
had the following words about MNDoT's attempt
(successfully) to make the Access Project into an
expansion project:

"it is my opinion, the opinion of the community, and
the opinion of the majority of officials representing
Minneapolis that lengthening our bridges and acquiring
more right-of-way in the course of constructing new
freeway ramps is not only significant, but a breach of
our good faith understanding that the Lake Street/35th
& 36th St. ramp configuration is not now and never
will be an expansion project."

It's unfortunate that Sharon Sayles-Belton did not
have the time to finish bringing this project back to
the original intent. Will RT Rybak rise to the
challenge?
