Alright this is just too much. Today the Strib printed an article regarding community resistance to fencing being installed inside the Minnehaha Off Leash Dog Park Area. The article indicates that Victoria Stewart and Maria Johnson of St. Paul think either "hate it", or believe the "dogs won't like it", or that the fencing is a "travesty". Well, Miss Stewart and Johnson, what IS a travesty is that my dog Raj was killed during a visit to this very same dog park last May! The Park Board did the right thing by approving the installation of this fencing so that other park-goers would not have to endure having to carry their dogs bleeding, moaning in agony and pain up from the river bottom after falling off the cliffs that run along the entrance path. Not to mention the humans that have been rescued as they try to rescue their dogs. Community members need not be concerned that the Park Board recklessly is installing the fencing without careful consideration of the natural beauty of the park. Virgin prairie grasses are protected and were part of the special consideration taken during the planning of the fencing. I support making sure that the natural beauty of the park be maintained as much as possible. What is not beautiful is to have to endure the HELL of desperately watching our dog writhe in agony after falling 40+ feet down these cliffs to only die the moment we arrived at the pet hospital in Golden Valley on that fateful day! Today's Strib article goes on to quote Amy Copeland, Minneapolis as indicating that the "fencing will restrict their freedom, and will be able to be free", well Ms. Copeland, think of the freedom my dog Raj is afforded as he lies in his grave! Enough of this selfish attitude about having one's comfort challenged while enjoying the dog parks!! We will fight this one tooth and nail and puppy dogs tails to see that people continue to be educated about this danger. Well over 12 dogs have fallen and many have been seriously injured! What next children??? I implore all community members to think twice about resisting this fencing. I would hate for any of you to have to endure the blood and gore experienced! My original post to the Mpls Issues is below as well as the link to today's Strib article can be found here: http://www.startribune.com/stories/1551/3420216.html Also search the Peter Ritter article in City Pages printed shortly after we loss our dog. And lastly, WCCO's Kevyn Burger ran a story about our loss. Might be time to raise hell again!!! My original Mpls Issues post here: Last Saturday, May 18, 2002 my partner and I decided to take our 8-month-old Boxer pup, Raj, for a walk along Minnehaha Off-Leash Dog Park. As responsible pet owners, we frequent this off leash area because it is designated as a place where dogs can run free without being a menace to private and public property, and not be put in danger of being hit by cars. What we were not aware of is that inside the park and just to the left and below the main entrance trail, there lies a steep cliff. Imagine our horror when our pup ran just beyond this trail and fell forty feet to the bottom of the cliff. We struggled to carry all fifty-eight pounds of trembling, bleeding and frightened dog four blocks back to our parked car. Raj died in our arms just as we arrived at the animal emergency hospital. Hospital staff informed us that they have treated three other dogs that have fallen off cliffs inside this park. We trust that the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board will work swiftly and without haste to resolve this issue, by installing safety fencing along this dangerous portion of the trail. It is the professional, moral and ethical responsibility of park planners to see that such risks be identified and eliminated. Surely, the cost of a few hundred feet of fencing is less than the loss of any additional lives.
