With all the talk of the impending increases that will be imposed on the
citizens of the city, I think the citizens deserve an explanation of what
the public sector is trying to accomplish with these new revenues. An 18
percent increase is outrageous, and thank goodness that I don't live on a
fixed income, because I would not be able to afford to pay such an increase.
The message that you are all sending is not a good one. With the republicans
winning big in the last election, the last areas of true liberalism are in
the two largest cities in the state. People will act if taxes keep going up,
and services go down. The average taxpayer really doesn't understand how or
why this happens, and deserves to know where the new revenue is going to.
The other message that this increase sends to the taxpayers is that
government cannot, and will not live within its means. I should have to live
with less, not the government. I should have to pay for mistakes at the
public level, not the government. In my opinion, unless voted in by the
taxpayers, taxes should not jump more than the rate of infaltion. To take
that much money out of the private sector is going to kill the economy in
the city and the county. $150 is alot of trips to Tooties!
In the end, this is DFL problem. The DFL created it, spent the money, and
now the bills are coming in. And the taxpayers are on the hook. Think about
what the increase means, and what messages you are all sending to the
citizens of Minneapolis.
