No one should ever apologize for a long posting when the ideas are presented in such
concise and clear language.

I just want to say that it was a real pleasure to attend our last neighborhood meeting
in Sheridan to hear Walt Sentyrz present his plan for the expansion of his grocery,
which has been in his family for years. When I first moved to Sheridan, we had two
grocery stores: Sentyrz on 2nd Street, and the Rainbow on 17th and University Avenue
NE. Rainbow, never great to begin with, became Jubilee, then "Buy for Less"
(christened "Buy Less for Less" by my witty neighbors and "Buy for More" by crabby
me). Then it became a hulking shell surrounded by an abyss of asphalt.

In contrast, Sentyrz became proactive, adding Latino delicacies to appeal to new
members of the community, while retaining the Polish treats and newspapers with plans
to incorporate even more Eastern European foods. And hey, when Walt grabbed me one day
and asked for suggestions and I asked for some sesame bagels, there were sesame bagels
on the shelf the next week.

Add to this the deli counter, with homemade sausage and cheese, and the, er, liquor
store attached to the grocery--and all this just blocks from my house--and you'll
understand the simultaneously righteous and selfish capitalistic reason why I don't go
to Cub. Shop at Cub? What for? Why, when we have a Farmer's Market, too?
