Many intelligent people do. But political rhetoric drums up more fear and hatred in the hearts of the citizenship until it's drowned out. Politicians are timid and afraid of being accused of being "weak on crime" in the sound bite wars. Now the fashionable rhetoric of "evil" just keeps escalating the fear and there is little room for intelligent policy making. Really, the country is ruled by lowest common denominator emotions and sound bites instead of reasoned discourse. As long as politians continue going on and on about how "evil" people are trying to kill us, we're more ruled by the adrenaline "fight or flight" reflex than intellect. Don't expect a change any time soon, polititians have figured out that fear is the major tool at their disposal for insuring their funding and votes.
