I would also like to thank those who have taken the time both on the list and off-list to write out the issues around this topic.  The conversation has progress from a somewhat vague plea that a largely ignored ordinance was going to be repealed to a more substantive education for (I presume) many of the list readers of what the real pros and cons are around the issue.  It has been especially valuable to have people outline the impacts of concentration on the residents of supportive housing. Perhaps that sounds naive but if you are not employed by that industry and you don't live in a neighborhood that is home to these facilities how else will you develop an informed opinion?

I wonder if the ordinance was enforced vigorously if market forces would naturally push these centers out into "the next tier" of neighborhoods, dictated by the availability of existing buildings and real estate prices... thus achieving the desired distribution (vs clustering).

I have a (Vague) memory of a center, perhaps for troubled teens, that purchased (or tried to) a large house in Tangletown a few years ago, maybe 5 or so.  They came under a lot of negative press for being "extravagant" when their $$ could have bought "so much more" in a less expensive neighborhood.  The neighbors were also alarmed that they had no idea who had bought the house - there was no public discussion.  I believe they quickly sold the house or cancelled the sale.  Can anyone else provide better details on the circumstances around that event?  It seems like an example of what would happen ideally in terms of siteing with the potential problems as well...
