Federal mediation sessions intended to
improve community-police relations in
Minneapolis are supposed to start Tuesday.
But disagreements continue to divide the
parties before they can even get to the
table.

Police Chief Robert Olson delayed the
start of talks this week because the
NAACP and the Urban League said they
hadn't been asked to participate. Since
then, others have raised concerns.

Minneapolis police should move forward
in mediation sessions with a nine-member
community negotiating team chosen in a
controversial selection process last month.

That recommendation was made at the end
of a contentious four-hour meeting Tuesday
night by a senior federal mediator who was
trying to help develop a new community panel,
said Pauline Thomas, a member of the nine-member team.

Abbott and Costello first performed their
"Who's on First?" routine -- about a goofy
roster of baseball players -- in the 1930s.
It went like this:

"Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't
Know's on third," Abbott would say.

MINNEAPOLIS: Police relations talks hit
delays
BY AMY MAYRON
Pioneer Press

Protesters rallied Thursday against the death
of a Minneapolis man at the hands of officers
while efforts to organize federal mediation to
ease racial tensions between the community and
the police department foundered.

Christopher Burns, 44, died last month in
police hands while struggling as officers
restrained him during a domestic argument.
His death shows the importance of moving
forward with a federal mediator, said
Michelle Gross of the organization
Communities United Against Police Brutality.
