Hey folks,

The political and economic discussion is great! I'm even going to take
Mike up on his suggestion about urban planning's role over the next few
days.

But now, let's talk about ice.

I've been out skating about a dozen times so far this season and the
Park Board has been doing a fine job with ice rinks - until it snowed.

At Matthews Center the staff was told to make a big sheet of ice. Flood
this huge area they were told and make loads of ice. So, they rose early
when it was freezing cold right after Thanksgiving and the stayed late
those several days. They made a great sheet of ice! We were skating all
over the park.

On Thursday and Friday it snowed a bit and the plows came to sweep off
the snow. They left half of the skatable sheet of ice unplowed! What a
waste of water! What a loss to our community. What a potential for
injury. We need a larger open sheet of ice to accommodate all the folks
who want to skate. With rinks closing across the city due to budget
constraints the remaining ice should be better and larger.

The ice skating season is short but let's challenge our park employees
to do the bet they can and provide great service. This is how we can all
pull together and build a great city while still tightening our belt.

Today I spent an hour shoveling the unplowed ice at Matthews to make
room for the passel of kids who wanted to skate. I hope that next time
we need the rink is swept it will be done by a park employee motivated
by a desire to serve the community.
