Perhaps the key is that Brother Price was never previously elected as a DFLer to office, as were Dean Zimmerman and Annie Young. Only one person, Councilmember Johnson Lee, has been elected to public office as Green candidate without first having spent several years building up credentials, reputation and name recognition at the expense of the DFL party "machine". And she actually tried to get DFL endorsement before running to the Green party.
