Visiting
http://www.mpls.k12.mn.us/about/report_2001/challenges_progress.shtml,
I found that Minneapolis spent $10,226 per pupil in
2000. Did our per-pupil expenditures increase by
$6,000 over the past two years? If not, I'd like to
know how 7,450 plus 9,000 equals 10,226.

On a related note, 70 percent of Minneapolis students
qualified for free or reduced-price school lunches,
compared to 48 percent of Austin students. Poverty
doesn't explain everything, but we're not exactly
comparing apples to apples here.

I'm sure there are legitimate questions to be asked of
our local school district, just as there are
legitimate questions to be asked of the AISD. However,
as was the case with the city council math discussion
we had earlier this week, it will help us to stick to
factually valid statistics whenever possible.
