A few random thoughts on this race.
Owning a coffeeshop in NE, here's a few things I hear from NEers. The pre-endorsement time and process was especially truncated and thus the process was more telescoped than normal, even for us DFLers, remember Jerry Janezich's endorsement. The disturbing fact here was that the Party Chair, Mike Erlandson, had a fundraiser event at his South Mpls. Parkway home BEFORE the endorsement. ( Olin is of course married to the 5th Congressional District Party Chair) This sense of early and unnecessary interference in a local affair upset plenty of NEers. (In the DFL, We seem to have a problem with dynasticism and entitlement, Skip H. . Buck H, etc. etc. ) And we seem to have gotten away from winning.
At the same time, it is unfair to jump on the Ted Mondale's, Julie Sabo's, Barbara Johnson's of the city. This is their family business. They grew up in politics; it cannot be a surprise that some of them will go into politics. The same goes for acting families (second a third generation actors, e.g. Drew Barrymore, Emilio Estevez, etc) and plumbing families....
In this case Olin's only claim to fame and resume item, appears to be his employment for the congressman, who appears in nearly all of his campaign material. Olin also regularly referenced his boss at the debate at Mill City. This may or may not be enough for him. Nonetheless, it's dynasticism racketed up one.WM: To be utterly fair, what can Sabo do else? Moore has worked for him for years, if he does not support him, the populace thinks Moore is an inadequate employee and Sabo's a doof for not firing him. Then Sabo's office is in a conundrum because Moore's done his job for X years. Moore has to quit, and if he hasn't won an election, he's now out of a job too.
I don't know a lot about NEers, but I know they get rankled when important "Southsiders" get in their business.
WM: This touches on a parochialism that we in the Central Southside share
with NE. I'm not giving it a plus or minus, just saying it exists. I remember
being very resentful of CNIA bringing Northside people to Central
for our annual meeting. Nothing against anyone who came, but our
annual meeting is a neighborhood event. We want to highlight neighborhood
folks and traditions. (Not an exact analogy, since a neighborhood meeting is in no way comparable to an election and aspiring politicians cannot make sure that all their friends live inside the jurisdiction's boundaries.)
