Minneapolis Council committee turns aside anti-war resolution

For the second time in a year, a Minneapolis City Council committee has
declined to take a stance against war with Iraq.

Led by Council President Paul Ostrow, members of the Intergovernmental
Relations Committee on Tuesday refused to consider the anti-war resolution
sponsored by Council Members Paul Zerby and Dean Zimmerman.

Zerby said after the meeting he would seek to have the full council vote on
the measure at its regular meeting Friday.

Ostrow and Mayor R.T. Rybak said they endorsed the sentiment of the
resolution. But both said the city should focus on local issues, such as
affordable housing and the strained Minneapolis budget, rather than
international relations.

Rybak spoke with about a dozen disappointed anti-war activists after the
meeting about his personal opposition to the war and his pledge to continue
protesting a U.S. attack on Iraq. "I have been out there and I will continue
to be out there," he said. "It's just a matter of what we do here with
massive issues that nobody else is going to address."

The resolution contended that a war with Iraq could cost $100 billion, $1.4
billion of which could fall upon state taxpayers through higher federal
income taxes.

Ostrow was joined by committee members Scott Benson, Barret Lane and Lisa
Goodman in declining to vote on the measure. Zerby was the lone committee
member to push for consideration.

About 36 cities have taken positions opposing U.S. military action against
Iraq, but Rybak and the current council leadership have repeatedly rebuffed
attempts to have the city weigh in on national and international policy.
