The 31st Annual CUE Awards were given and there were again lots of great projects. Ironically, this year there were really not a lot of great architecturally designed big buildings downtown or in the warehouse district, either newly constructed or rehabbed, that were nominated or made the finalists. It was the first time in years that some Park Board building or park was a nominee. But the list was doused with renovations and work being done in the communities. There, as always, were a few highlights and this year was no exception.

But the things that stuck out in my mind the most were (with lots of personal bias shown here :-):
All the stuff going on in Phillips that were nominated for awards...
AINBC and their work on Franklin Avenue,
Our Savior's Lutheran Church
and a WINNER - Ed Burke and THE PHILLIPS GARDEN SHOP (just one block from my place and in two weeks opening a coffeeshop)

The Spiff the Biffs project which is just the cat's meow. The Park Board was certainly the recipient of these folks commitment to fixing up the place. It was quite a daunting task with the building in such disrepair and this team of community folks led the charge and got it done. Thank You!

And then there were the Gardens - my favorites.
The LRT/Korean Gardens
and our good, good e-list friend Fredric Markus and his designer gardens he has worked on with youth and members of the Horn Towers Community in a great partnership to save those gardens and make them productive for members of that community. Through adversity and hard times their gardens brought them some beauty and peace. They really deserved the award they received tonight.

Kudos to all and special hats off to Fred and his crew.

And the musical prelude to the event brought to us by Scott Benson, Bob Miller and R.T. was a sight and sound to behold and also thanks to Paul Zerby for stopping by to help give out the awards.

CODE PINK - East Phillips
and the 2003 Park Board rep on CUE
