The 21st Annual Battle of the Jug Bands took place Sunday, Feb 2nd at the
Cabooze Bar in Minneapolis. Minneapolis politcos Annie Young and Dean
Zimmermann were in attendance, as was Met Council member James "Red" Nelson.
Dean was spotted taking bribes from members of the band The Cheeptons. I'm
really not sure why they were bribing Dean - he wasn't a judge and had no
influence on the judges decision. He was also caught red-handed stealing the
much coveted waffle-iron prize, which is oft stolen by Minneapolis musician
Judy Larson. Judy is a member of the of the Cheeptons, who actually won the
contest fair and square. I suspect some kind of collusion here, but I have
no hard evidence of that.
This year's event was memorial for Dave Ray, long time Jug Band Battle
organizer and battler. The proceeds will be going to the Dave Ray Memorial
Fund at Heart of the Beast Theatre in Minneapolis.
The Battle is a bunch of old West Bankers idea of how to beat the mid-winter
blues and has been held exclusively in Minneapolis for 21 years. There are
off-shoots of the Battle in Duluth and Effie Minnesota. If you want to hear
about next year's Battle, please e-mail me off-list with your snail mail
info and I will see that you get on the mailing list. I will try to remember
to post in advance of the Battle next year.
