Isn't is JUST about time that we stop calling it an "upset' when an endorsed DFL candidate gets beaten. Especially in the current situation when both candidates were unknowns outside their own circles? It was a matter of relatively few votes in a rather SMALL turnout (16 percent). This was a case of someone had to win, and the outsider won, which is not at ALL uncommon in DFL elections. And, for that matter, in Republican elections. Remember when Rudy and Arnie won their elections? Neither one had been picked by the party, but dissident DFLers and independent voters preferred them. Probably the same thing in 3rd ward. What percentage of the 3rd ward considers itself diehard DFL, anyway? The DFL leadership in Minneapolis is pretty solidly caucasian, so to the minorities, it probably looks like the best of a bad deal. When minorities mix it up with the cops, who in the DFL leadership takes the part of the civilian who got beat up? It is dubious in the extreme that Republican
leadership would help any more, so the people who have the most runins with beat cops have to see the whole major party structure as being pretty cold to them. Now, we'll see a different take with Don Samuels. Will he fight for them? If not, then the minority community is fresh out of luck, well, except for Spike Moss and a few others like him. -------------- Jim Mork--Cooper "War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it; and those who brought war into our Country deserve all the curses and maledictions a people can pour out."
