Jennifer Lovaason is exactly right that the new LRT line will be a cross-section of the population of Minneapolis. This notion that light rail is elitist is bogus. Light rail is simply faster and more efficient than buses because it runs along a dedicated corridor.
Contrary to the claims made by the Citizens for Effective Transit, the new Light Rail line will be a fabulous new addition to our system. It is a strong line in that it connects two major nodes and several other high density destinations. Best of all, light rail doesn't have to fight traffic. For me, the real problem with the Hiawatha corridor is the design of the roadway which blatently broke the promises made by MnDOT to neighborhoods and desperately needs to be traffic-calmed. Hiawatha Avenue is a death-trap to cross either by bike or foot and is way too wide for the 35 mile-an-hour speed limit mandated by MnDOT's promises to our neighborhoods. Turn Hiawatha into a commercial corridor and use the freed-up space for new business and residential to complement the light rail.
