Friends of community journalism in Minneapolis will be saddened to hear that Mike Anderson died Friday. He had been battling ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, for several years. Mike edited the Northeaster and NorthNews. But he also had a knack for tough investigative reporting at the sub-city level. He was the first reporter in the Twin Cities to write about what became known as mortgage flipping. He brought tough-minded analysis to bear in examining the city's financing of the Edison youth hockey arena. He brought the private market's expertise to bear on why it was taking so many decades to renovate the Grain Belt brewery. One of the highlights of a reporting trip to Northeast for me was the likelihood of running into Mike at a community gathering. The community is the poorer for his parting.
