Hi friends I too participated in yesterday's march in Minneapolis. We Minneapolitans in general are not shouters. It was a relatively quiet demonstration. I think the fact that so many came on a bitterly cold day is a loud statement for us. I don't need to shout to protest. Our mere presence speaks volumes.
A friend asked me if I thought R.T was there. I hadn't seen him yet and paused for a moment; I did see him later; I thought about the situation in NYC and its mayor's attempts to block the NYC march. I replied to my friend, "I haven't seen R.T yet but yes he is here in a way, because look at how this march has not had a single obstacle from the police or city." The NYC mayor and police were obstructionist in the extreme. The Mpls police were quite helpful yesterday from what I could observe, making sure nobody accidentally got run over. I also saw Scott Benson at the march. I also saw a fire truck with a protest sign and a firefighter buying a peace lawn sign through the window of his truck. I do wish our city council and mayor would support an antiwar resolution. The buck is going to stop here in our city as the federal, and then state, govts pass on the costs of war and freeze or lower fed and state taxes. We will end up paying for this war partly through city/property taxes. That's one reason I think the city does need to pass an antiwar resolution. The next big march will be on March 8 starting at noon the midtown YWCA, going on Lake St. to Powderhorn Park. I am concerned about lack of access to protest info by people who are don't have internet access. Please spread the word about this and other Mpls peace events to folks you know who aren't connected. It seemed to me that the march yesterday was about 98% white and I'll bet that the vast majority of people there heard about the march through their computers. We need to widen the circle.
