I heard the other day that the city has a platform and was searching on
google for it (haven't found it yet) but did find this
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/advancedserver/evaluation/casestudies/cityofminn.asp
on the Microsoft web site regarding our IT infrastructure. From what I can
see this looks like a great opportunity for Redmond, Washington to siphon
off money that doesn't have to go. There is such a thing as Free software
you know.
"The Microsoft platform on the ES7000 makes much more sense financially
than AIX and Oracle ... It's fair to say that any future development on
AIX and Oracle will be closely scrutinized, and that our long-term
strategy is to eliminate them and standardize on the Microsoft platform."
-- Karl Kaiser
CIO
City of Minneapolis
It makes even more sense financially to not pay Microsoft either. We
shouldn't be paying for things that we don't have to especially when all
the budgets are being shrunk. What Karl ought to be doing is scrutinizing
future development on non-free platforms.
