All of the attempts to convince us that this IS a city issue are not compelling. Using those same arguments then this is a germane issue for every organization in this country. Should we have our neighborhood councils vote on anti-war resolutions? How about Water Conservation Districts? The Mpls School Board?

yes, yes and yes.
as long as the organization passing the anti-war resolution can tie it to local issues, it is appropriate to put a resolution up for a vote. the local issue that is most relevant at the present time is, of course, money. if the federal gov't is spending billions and then trillions of dollars in a war in iraq, there is going to be less money dribbling down to states and cities. minneapolis is already suffering a budget shortfall that will decrease the amount of money given to libraries, parks and schools. what happens when we are dealing with the cost of war, not just the cost of amassing 100,000 troops.

a few months ago i was against to our city passing an anti-war resolution -- i felt it was not germane. i now see it differently -- i see how it is a local issue and we deserve to be heard. i can see where the mayor and city council would be reluctant to address the war on the grounds of moral opposition. the thing is, funding IS a local issue -- the case has been made. now our mayor and city council need to re-evaluate their position on the matter of passing this resolution.

so thank you for the recommendation. i am going to contact my school board, library board and conservation district representative, and ask them to author an anti-war resolution that addresses how a war in iraq will be detrimental to our city.
