It's not a hoax.  The student was interviewed on CBC's As it Happens 
last week.  She has a system for downloading the emails, and yes, her 
computer crashed a couple of times, but she has managed to get replies 
from every state and all but about a dozen countries.  At this point, 
though, I don't think it's useful for anyone from this list to reply to 
her request, unless you are replying from another country or you want 
to forward the message to someone who lives in a remote country so she 
can fill in her gaps.  I think she said she has a web page with 
results, but I don't know if it's up yet.
