The strip of industry between the interstate and the river has largely been free of the rampant violence that has overun much of the Northside. The Holiday station was a friendly oasis for neighbors, itinerant truck drivers, construction workers taking a break, etc.. The staff always had plenty of hot coffee ready and the air hose could fill truck tires. Our little strip of sanity to the east of the Northside free fire zone has now been violated.
The problem has been festering for a while. Down at 18th and Washington the Old Colony station has become a late night hangout for various and sundry gangbangers and such. Gunshots are a frequent occurance there, in fact there was a shooting there last night. No death was pronounced so that "shots fired" didn't make the news. The violence at Old Colony is so frequent that Minneapolis Police often stage there in readiness around bar closing time. Makes one wonder why the city allows Old Colony to stay open all night- perhaps it's because their magazine rack is mostly stocked with porn? Having the 200 Club open again doesn't help either- the dealers are doing business in the parking lot just like before.
But I degress- most of our city fathers and mothers, even the one that's supposed to represent this 3rd ward, don't know much what's going down on the Northside. And if they do they don't give a damn anyways- 'cus it's just us poor folks who live on the wrong side of the Great Northern tracks.
hanging on in Hawthorne,
