My first apartment was on 27th and Portland in a big
old house that was converted to five apartments. I had
a round living room that presented some interesting
challenges for furniture. I shared it with a friend
and we paid $125/mo. between us. She went back to
school so I moved across the alley to 27th and Oakland
to an efficiency with an enclosed porch for $80/mo.
The guy downstairs would pay my friend down the hall
and I to take our clogs off when we came home from the
bar so we didn't wake him up. Of course, that didn't
stop us from singing "you are my sunshine" through her
six foot speakers at 2:00 in the morning. Youth!

Our rendition of air conditioning was to get the sheet
wet and turn the fan on. Cigarettes were $.25 a pack
and you could get a drink at Moby Dicks for less than
a dollar. We walked across 35W to go to Sullivans
Super Valu to get groceries until the construction to
block off Nicollet for K-Mart started.

it's the only thing that ever has." -- Margaret Mead
