Just for another example of how good folks have it in MN, my first apartment was in Yonkers, NY in 1983. It was a crappy 1 BR in a seriously crappy neighborhood for $700 plus utilities. I had a roommate. He paid an extra $50/month so he could have the bedroom. I lived in the dining room. I was working at a bookstore for $3.81/hr ($7924/year). No car, no phone, no credit. David Berkowitz (Son of Sam) was the famous neighborhood alumni.

I moved after the 4th or 5th multiple homocide on my block during the hayday of the crack epidemic - 1987.

BTW, Chief Olson was working for the Yonkers PD in those days...

In contrast, my first apartment in Mpls. was in 1993 at 10th Ave and 18th St. (the old Phoenix, rehabbed by PPL in the early 80s). It was a $475/month 2BR, had central A/C, off-street parking, laundry IN the unit, brick and stucco walls, timbered 10' ceilings, 6' windows and awnings, and the nicest landlord I've ever met.

It was NICE!!!

People I worked with in Edina went wide-eyed when I told them my address. I chuckled and told them that compared to Yonkers, it was a really quiet block.
