Except that the 8 percent tax levy per year proposed by the Mayor included the library. We'll still have the same eight percent cap, we'll still be paying the same amount of taxes we just won't have a library. Not floating the bonds for the library frees up more tax capacity for the city to deal with budget problems.

This is EXACTLY the argument Vikings fans made when we refused to fund their luxury arena when health and food needs were unmet.
Tell me something, Carole. Do different PEOPLE pay the costs of these two expenses? I know I pay for the police. I also have money on my property tax bill for the library. Am I off the HOOK for the new building? I don't think so, but if you have good news for me, I'm willing to abandon that particular controversy.
See, my argument is that if you saddle me with a building to pay off, you make it that much HARDER for me to pay the costs of keeping full police protection.
But if there's a way out of this box, I'd sure like to hear about it.
