I agree with Jeffrey Strand - the Southwest Journal article was terrific. Now I hope its talented writer, Robyn Repya, will ask former Council Member Steve Minn why the land for his Stone Arch apartment project is only valued at $3.75 per square foot for property tax purposes. He is quoted in the article: "In third-ring suburbs, Minn said, the cost is $2 to $3 per foot; for second ring suburbs it's $5 to $10 -- but for Minneapolis land it's $20 to $25 per foot."
Which is it Mr. Minn? $3.75 per foot or $20 per foot? It should be understood that understating land values hurts taxpayers three ways. 1. Minneapolis property tax collections are reduced. 2. Federal tax collections are reduced (land cannot be depreciated, therefore no tax losses for partners.) 3. Minnesota tax collections are reduced (State follows federal tax policy.)
