Why doesn't Minneapolis pass an anti-war resolution? Some of my friends
have speculated that Mayor Rybak and City Council President Paul Ostrow
are hoping that Governor Pawlenty and the Republican-controlled State
House of Representatives will be more supportive of our city if no
anti-war resolution is passed. If this is the case, then it's clear that
their strategy isn't working. It may even backfire if terrorists,
reacting to possible escalation of our country's 13-year war against
Iraq, target American cities that have been compliant in its calculated
silence with the Bush administration This is not to say that we should
be second guessing and appeasing terrorists any more than we should
sencond guess and appease Republicans. As for the issue of an anti-war
resolution being out of the scope of the city's official business,
billions of our federal tax dollars, currently financing this war, could
be could be redirected to financially-strapped municipalities, like ours,
struggling with homelessness, inadequate homeland security, lack of
affordable housing, and underfunded public schools.----Peter Schmitz
