Why not make parents legally and financially
responsible for other crimes their children commit?

Am I missing something here?  I always thought that was already true -- parents can be held liable for damage caused by their minor children.

I know that when I was a minor and caused damage to someone's car, my parents promptly paid for the cleaning & repair (and 'withheld' part of my allowance until that amount was covered).  My parents felt this was their/my moral responsibility, and paid it without question.  But I guess I always thought that they had a legal responsibility for my actions as a minor.  Is this actually not true?
