Today, city attorneys sent a letter to RT Rybak and all 13 council members pointing out that they had prosecuted 43,981 cases in 2002 which amounted to 1,332 cases per attorney. They also mentioned that their strategy of aggressive enforcement of livability crimes, effective coalition with neighborhoods, and systemic reform of the criminal justice system was working. More miscreants are being prosecuted and given sentences.
They requested that both mayor and council members be aware that having police is not enough because the police capture suspects while the city attorneys prosecute them and that the two go hand in glove to make Minneapolis livable.
City Council meets tomorrow morning to consider how to cut the city attorney's budget.
It is true that adequate sanctions for livability crimes works to make Minneapolis more livable. It is also true that if the city attorneys cut back on prosecutions there will be a rise in crime.
You might want to e-mail council members and RT about your thoughts on the issue.
